The outlook for small to medium business manufacturing

It is clear that the future in manufacturing belongs to small medium, innovative businesses that are willing to embrace new and emerging technologies and find new ways to serve new customers in new markets.

Over the next 5-10 years, small medium manufacturing businesses in Malaysia will need to embrace the industrial revolutions that is taking place today else risk been rendered irrelevant in today's Digital Disruptive age.

Whenever there's widespread change in any sector you can bet your bottom dollar that a word will be coined alongside it, and the new buzzword for the combination of industry and the current Internet of Things (IoT) technology is Industry 4.0.

A German government memo released way back in 2013 was one of the first times that 'Industrie 4.0' was mentioned. The high-tech strategy document outlined a plan to almost fully computerize the manufacturing industry without the need for human involvement.

Think about what the industrial revolution did for the Victorians and you get an idea of the type of wholesale change that is already taking hold of the industrial sector. You're probably wondering exactly what it is though, and with that in mind, there are new technologies you absolutely have to know about the future industry trend.

Many manufacturing companies have a difficult time deciding which direction they need to go from a software standpoint. Talk to us, we will help you simplify your manufacturing processes.

INDUSTRY 4

During my engineering work days, I remember we have had Intelligence Building & Factory Automations, even Smart home. We have the Chillers, Condensers, AHU units and lifts and lighting all linked up to a computer centralized system. Monitoring and Sensing chilled water, condenser water and air temperature and volumes for the building to optimize energy usage and comfort and conveniences. That was achievable then if you can afford it.
Today than ever before all these now becomes a realities in IoT and INDUSTRY 4, thanks to the quantum leap of Computer Processing Power, OSes and modern internet (CLOUD) ready Applications Software and of course CONNECTIVITY.

Here is an amazing useful video that explains about INDUSTRY
4, produced by KPMG.

What is the Difference between Sage 300 Lot and Serial Numbers?

Sage 300 Serialized Inventory & Lot Tracking has been used frequently to track products throughout the receiving and sales process. However, there is an important distinction between lot tracking and serialization.

The Lot (or batch number) is a number assigned to a group of products for which are common with specific properties. There is a one-to-many relationship as many products can have the same lot ID. Batch numbers typically provide additional functionality for tracking manufactured date, expiry dates and other more detailed information. Typically used in the food manufacturing or distribution business.

For Example, a food company could make 1,000 cans of sardines in an 8-hour shift.  Each can’ would be labels with the same lot id used to track the manufacturing date or expiry date. While Pharmaceutical companies have analogous tracking requirements for their drugs as required by our government - the ability to keep track of stock by lot throughout the supply chain processes and the expiry and recall dates is a mandated requirement.

Sage 300 -  Lot Tracking traces lots back to your vendors and delivery of products to your clients to help comply with regulatory requirements and to provide better service.

Sage 300 serialized Inventory allows properties that can be different for stock items of the same product. Unlike lot ids, there is a one-to-one relationship as a unique number is assigned to a single product. No other product can exist with the same serial number. Typically used in the machines manufacturer or distributer.

It helps in keeping track of warranty period and service history. If a medical device company is making
Electrocardiograph, each ECG machine model is packaged with its own kits and accessories, and each of its components that make up the KIT has it owned serial numbers. You may group each items with its own serial number together as a set for sale or individually.

When creating sales order for a product, you typically may commit the specific serial number of the product based on your available stock’s serial numbers at hand or in some operation you may make a sales order for the ECG machine, but you wouldn't specify the serial numbers at the time of making a sales order; you would specify them when you make the shipment.

Sage 300 - Serialized Inventory tracks serial numbers from Purchase Orders to Inventory Control to Order Entry and historical inquiry; assigns system-generated serial numbers to items not serialized at the time of receipt.

Why should I choose Sage 300 ERP?

Businesses looking to purchase and implement an ERP system almost always find the process complex, time consuming and expensive. Evaluating a solution is never an easy exercise; much time and efforts have to be put in. demonstrations and discussions with solution partners and end users.

We suggest that the right decision need to be made only once. You will not need to change your software every other year as in the case of the scenarios when a wrong or unwise selection has been made. The right decision can propel your business forward, while the wrong decision can be a costly handicap.
So In evaluating a solution consideration has to be given on the longevity and growth path of the software and the company behind the software.

Here are some of the factors that you can consider:

True Scalability
Sage 300 is a business management software solution designed for  medium-sized and small businesses. Critical program functionality includes support for accounting, distribution, manufacturing and project management tasks.

With three Sage 300 editions to choose from, you don’t have to worry about outgrowing your system. When your business grows, and you need to add more users or capacity, just move up to a higher edition. Screens and modules are consistent between the editions, and data migration is a cinch—so you can forget about system downtime, and focuses on helping your business continue to thrive and grow.

Sage 300’s object-oriented and multi-tiered architecture is what makes it so flexible
. All three editions share the same architecture and code base, which makes it simple for you to upgrade your as your business grows, and yet retain the valuable history of transactions for your analysis.

All Sage 300 editions offer the same flexibility: you choose the deployment options, the user interface and languages, the network environment or operating system, the add-on software developed by Sage Software or independent parties, and the features that help you operate more efficiently and profitably.

Domain Experience
One of the crucial ERP requirements is proper vendor selection apart from software selection. Many ERP failures can be traced to systems that don’t fit the needs of the business. For this reason, a rigorous approach to choosing your ERP system is essential to avoid common pitfalls and maximize the return on investment from the outset.

However, most entrepreneurs don’t have the expertise, time or resources to manage a major system implementation initiative. So, it makes sense to get the help of an experienced, business partner who has the right domain experience be it in manufacturing or project that has a proven record of implementation, training and success. They can provide you with the knowledge and expertise you need to manage your ERP project.

When considering an ERP implementation, make sure the training, scalability and vendor performance can meet your company's needs.

Lean Manufacturing and ERP.

So what does Lean Manufacturing mean to you? Is it just the buzz word? Is it just JIT re-stated? Is it applicable to smaller firms than say, Toyota? It will be interesting to hear your thoughts on Lean, as we do receive inquiry from manufacturers in our region listing lean as a requirement.
Although most of the time they do not really know what is lean all about and looking for a piece of software to help them solve problems. This has also been fuel by many software vendors, playing one up-man-ship by claiming that their ERP/MRP is Lean manufacturing systems.

From my understanding (and I'm no manufacturing guru, so take it with a grain of salt)

Lean is a strategy and generally is not an ERP product function or module. However, I personally believe that ERP products are either Lean "sympathetic" or not. It means also optimizing your process and the system that supports it. Off course the purist would insist on mimicking the kanban card systems. For me it comes down to keeping inventory as low as possible and reducing waste at every step. That is what Sage 300 Manufacturing helps you to achieve.

So can Lean/MRP co-exist? Some purist will say no, akin to water and oil. But certainly, in many companies lean and ERP do coexist, if only out of necessity.

So what does it leave me with Sage 300 Manufacturing? (Which I am a partner) Yes, they do they support Lean? We (together with clients) start by reviewing a few key business processes, identifying obvious waste in a well-defined area, to see how to remove waste. Success in an early stage will motivate the company to continue its lean efforts.

Sage 300 Manufacturing market is in the small to mid-size enterprises, so our experiences are strictly toward these.  Streamlining process sometimes involve software, sometime it is not. Lean thinking should be applied not only on manufacturing processes but to all area in the business by streamlining several areas that needed attention.

Start small and be happy for small blessings and move on to bigger thing s in the lean journey.

So you have a failed ERP implementation!

So you have a failed ERP implementation and are on the market for replacement.

Here's some advice about the process, not related to any product:
  1. Go back and figure out why you selected XYZ ERP to begin with.
  2. Was it because it was a famous brand name?
  3. Was because they give it to you at a rock bottom price?
  4. Was it because the salesman promised that his ERP can do anything and everything?
  5. Because it was decided at HQ high level and forced upon you?
Anything that didn't consider whether it solved your business problems is going to cause this situation.

So what’s the best way to find the ERP solution that’s going to be the best fit for your organization?

What You Need vs. What You Want

  1. Then go back to your list of business needs and the problems you want solved and figure out what went wrong in the solution you picked so you don't do that again.
  2. Pick and prioritize your features- You’ve identified the pain now choose the pill. Which features will eliminate the pain, accounting, job costing, order entry or maybe its production planning.
  3. Now, with those requirements and problems to be solved in hand, go back again to other products catering to your industries.
  4. Compare again, and talk to some companies using those products. Ask those companies how well the product deals with the requirements/issues you have. How is the ERP vendors implementations team experiences.
  5. Repeat - Select again.
Wish You Success!!

SAGE SOLUTIONS: Project Manufacturing

The Challenges

P
roject-based manufacturers such as (MTO) Manufacture-to-Oder, (ETO) Engineer-to-order, face business challenges that simply cannot be resolved by traditional ERP software.

Manufacturing-to-job companies need to be able to provide accurate cost estimates to customers, manage all aspects of complex projects, deliver on time and on budget—all while keeping a close eye on cash flow. There is intense pressure to reduce costs, shorten cycle times, while maintaining high quality.

Finally, manufacture-to-oroject companies need an accurate picture of the profitability of each project in order to comprehend the impact on the business. In many instances they also need flexible income recognition methods, progress claims based on percentage completion and support retainage accounting.

Careware Systems - is one of the leading Malaysia providers of ERP systems for:
  • Manufacture-to-order (MTO) Manufacturers
  • Engineer-to-order (ETO) Manufacturers
  • Project based Engineering Contract
Our Sage 300 ERP software was specifically suited for engineering-intensive companies.

Why a typical manufacturing ERP system won’t cut for a project based manufacturer?
Is This YOUR Company? Project based manufacturer typically involves in designing and building complex products to exact customer specifications frequently involves long lead times and heavy engineering content.

Characteristics of Engineer-to-order, project-based, and custom manufacturers:

  • Set up complex estimates by specifying the quantity (for example, hours), unit cost and billing rate (for time and materials projects) for each staff member, material (inventory item), subcontractor, equipment, miscellaneous item and overhead expense allocated to a manufacturing job. Assign the cost categories to which they apply to automatically calculate cost and revenue estimates for each cost category, or simply define the cost and revenue estimates for each category within a manufacturing job.
  • You can track cost overrun on line as the cost & requisition come in and added to the job process.
  • Integrates with all departments and modules for efficient, streamlined process throughout the company.

ERP Survey for Malaysia - Small Medium Industry.

In 2016 a survey was done among Small Medium Manufacturers in Malaysia on what are the obstacles that hinder SMI to adopt ERP software and what are the requirements they are looking for.
(A total of about 950 companies were called upon of which 55% participated in the survey.)

Th
e feed backs weren’t surprising. Among what users want, according to the survey, are more flexible and accessible ERP that will enable company executives to access information via tablets and smartphones.

Here are the most important considerations for future ERP implementations," as ranked by survey respondents, are:Their Requirements:

  • They want an ERP to have a built-in manufacturing solution & fully integrated.
  • They want the manufacturing system to be easy to use.
  • They want a short time to benefit from the whole manufacturing project. (Most says in 2-3 months.)
  • They want a cost-effective solution with flexible deployment. (Premise/Cloud & mobile Access)
Their Challenges:
  • The cost issue (ERP that cost up to ½ million> is way beyond the affordability of SME)
  • The software & support issue (ERP that is too complex & take years to implement. The consultant is too new or do not have the domain experience)
  • The people issue. (Knowledgeable staffs are hard to come by and problem of staffs turnover)
Assuming that cost & support issues can be mitigated by the affordable Sage 300 Manufacturing Systems and vendor domain experience, staff turnover is a serious concern for manufacturing industries. And many companies do not have a formalized and documented policy and process guide.

Sage 300 Visual Process Flows
